If i owe arrears to the state of Louisiana, can they take my future children?

My son was taken by the state as soon as he was born because i was on drugs. I was willing to sign him over immediately, but they told me i seemed indecisive, so they would give me more time to reconsider. I was still addicted to the drugs, so i avoided talking to any officials or doctors. I went to jail, and tried to sign him over again, and they said the same thing. They refused to let me give him up willingly. The foster mom eventually adopted him, and then i owed the state back child support. I had no job and i was homeless so i had no way to pay it. Eventually, i got off the drugs, got a job, and started paying it. By then I owed over $2500. I'm still paying on it and I'm thinking about having another kid, but I'm scared Louisiana will take my next kid if i owe them back child support

I will re-route this to Child Custody as that is an appropriate category for this question.

A child support arrearage alone is not legal justification for the state to "take your future children." However, given the brief synopsis of your history provided in your question, I would strongly advise you not to engage in any activity that would result in the risk of you impregnating anyone, unless it is with your current wife (if you are married) with whom you are (and have been) in a long-standing stable relationship. If you are not married, don't have sex with anyone. Stay off drugs, stay gainfully employed, and pay the support you currently owe.

The State won't take your children because you owe money, they will take your children if you are on drugs. Stay clean. Fight the good fight. And hopefully you won't have any problems. Good luck.
