Notice period to serve ?

I came to US on a H1 visa. I put down my papers on last Friday. I kept 2 weeks of notice period and requested my employer to release me on 08/31. My HR straight away declined my request and asked me to serve 2 months of notice period. The duration of 2 month is applicable In India and as per the company policy if we are traveled on short or long term visa, it implies on us too. I heard about some thing called "Law of Land" that gives me an option of employment at will. I need to know - Can my employer hold my resignation for 2 months or I can able to resign by serving 14 days of notice period. can someone please advice.
