What options do I have for getting a company to pay me wages earned as an independent contractor for them?

I worked for a short time as a courier for a medical delivery service and they have yet to pay me for services. They keep acting like they are taking care of it every time I call and initiating a wire transfer for checks supposedly mailed to me I have not received, but then I get nothing. And, the one and only check (for 1st week of work) I did receive from them bounced.

It sounds as if they are not financially sound. Your best course of action would be to consult with an attorney in your area to determine how best to proceed.

If you were an independent contractor, then you can sue the business in justice court. The bounced check is an admission by the service as to the fact and amount of the debt. But you need to weigh the costs of litigation even in JP court with the likelihood of recovery. You do not state what you are owed but the filing and service fees in JP court will run about $125, I think. The bounced check may be an indication of cash flow or solvency issues.

You may also want to contact the Texas Workforce Commission and inquire as-to whether you were actually a contractor, or could be classified as an employee. Also, I'm transferring this question to the employment section so that you can get better answers.
