If your husband entered the U.S. legally, you can apply for adjustment of status for him. It will cost $355 for I-130 and $1,010 for I-485. There are several other forms you must fill out, documents, and information you will need. You may want to hire an attorney for this since it can be confusing. Attorneys charge differently but you should expect to pay $1,500 - $3,000.
If he legally entered the US, then you are free to sponsor him for a green card and fix his papers, as you say. If not, then you may need to apply for an I-601 waiver. I advise you to seek a consultation with a good immigration attorney to find out how to proceed in this case.
Please speak to an immigration attorney if you want fast, simple answers to your many questions -- about what papers you will need, the fees you must pay, how long the case will take, what is expected.
If you want general information, you can go to the web site of Citizenship and Immigration Service. However, this has a great amount of information and much of it is confusing.
