There are several differences between a DUI and what we call a "wet reckless", meaning a Reckless Driving/Alcohol Related. If you must chose between the two, the reckless driving is a far better option. With a reckless driving, you may receive a "withhold of adjudication" whereby you may have the case sealed at a later date.
Second, having a reckless driving on your driving record looks far better than having a DUI on your record. Also, if you have really bad luck and happen to be arrested a second time for DUI, you will not be subject to second time DUI minimum mandatory sentences. It will technically be treated as a "first time" DUI. Of course, you should expect the prosecutor and judge to realize what your wet reckless really was, and thus your next DUI will have more severe penalties than an average first time DUI.
Many times, the penalties for a DUI and a reckless driving with alcohol (wet RD) are similar. Expect to still see 1 year supervised probation, the DUI Counter Attack School, any treatment recommended, community service, the Victim Awareness Panel/Program, 6 months DL suspension, fine, court costs, etc.. If faced with the option, go for the wet RD/reckless driving with alcohol charge.
As stated above, having a reckless driving with alcohol conviction is much better than having a DUI conviction. I looks better and the ramifications of future DUI's would be worse if you already have a DUI on your record.
