My marriage license was never filed; can i file my taxes as single?

Business 2 views 1 answers
I recently got married due to pressure from my husband's family. I didn't want to b/c i want to still be able to get financial help for school. So we decided to not file the papers. It was conducted by a justice of the peace and we had two witnesses but after wards the judge gave us the papers to file so the court house doesn't have record. Would it be illegal then to continue to live our lives as single? When i file my taxes can i still file single and can i still ask for help for school?

If you are not married under state law because of the failure to file the marriage license, you can and should file your taxes as single. The question is, is your marriage lawful under state law?
