I was given a civil infraction ticket of $60 in Ann Arbor, MI. I paid it and on my case file that i searched on the 15th district court website it says the charge is “Possession of marijuana” but doesn’t say anything about “Controlled substance” would I be denied for my CPL license?

This is a delicate situation as there are multiple issues at stake. If you were charged with a misdemeanor, then it would impair your ability to obtain a CPL for 8 yrs. However, even if you were convicted under a municipal ordinance which purports to make possession of marijuana a civil infraction, if the police submitted a particular form to NICS indicating that you are a user of an illegal substance, then it would prevent you from passing a NICS check for at least 1 yr.. Michigan's CPL statute requires that an eligible applicant be able to pass a NICS check prior to being issued a CPL. Because marijuana is still considered a sched. 1 drug under the federal scheme, use and possession are incompatible with legal possession of a firearm under the federal statutes.
