Can sprint charge my card for a bill my son didn’t pay?
Anonymous4 views2 answers
6 months to a year ago I made a one time payment with my credit card to my sons sprint bill. My son stopped paying that bill so he no longer has that phone with sprint. He now owes over $1100 to them. Today I got an alert that sprint was trying to charge my credit card for over $1100. I replied it was fraud and my card was automatically canceled. We called sprint and we were told that my card was one of 5 cards that paid that bill. They said my card was the only active one so they could legally charge my card without my permission. I paid my sons phone bill ONE time. I did not approve for them to save my card on file. Is sprint wrong for doing this? What are my rights?
As Ms. Espada notes, Sprint is likely wrong. You can contact the PUC although I am unsure what that may do. Since, like all other wireless companies Sprint probably has a secret arbitration clause in their contracts and arbitration likely costs them at least 5 thousand to get going, perhaps you or your son should open up an arbitration against them? If they fail to appear, you win. If they see it, they may just write a check to save money...?? Good luck with it.

Having a record of a past payment made on a relative's credit card does not give Sprint permission to apply new charges to that card. If the card was cancelled, you don't need to worry about any additional charges. You may want to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
