You do not want to get arrested for being a sex offender on school grounds and then try to hang your hat on the "I wasn't loitering" defense. I can tell you with 99.9% certainty that if you are registered and you are located at a school for any reason, you are going to get arrested and it is doubtful that anyone is going to care why you were there. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm trying to give you good advice. You have a right to be involved in your children's education to whatever extent that does not involve your being physically on school property. The "loitering" defense mentioned above would apply more to a situtation where you were walking through a school safety zone or driving through it in your FedEx truck. However, if you're sitting on the bleachers in the gym, you're going to jail.

The school does not have the authority to exempt you from the law. An individual required to be registered under the Michigan Sex Offender Registration Act shall not reside, work, or loiter within a “student safety zone.” MCL 28.734(1)(a)-(b) and MCL 28.735(1). A “student safety zone” is “the area that lies 1,000 feet or less from school property.” MCL 28.733(f). MCL 28.733 also contains definitions of “loiter,” “school,” and “school property.” See MCL 28.733(b), (d), and (e). A first violation of MCL 28.734(1) or MCL 28.735(1) is a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than one year or a fine of not more than $1,000.00, or both. A second or subsequent violation is deemed a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than two years or a fine of not more than $2,000.00, or both. You may be exempt from the above restrictions depending on how old you were when you were convicted and the age of your victim. However, there is no exemption specific to parents who have children in school. On the other hand, it is arguable that if you are attending your own child's event you are not "loitering," which is defined as "to remain for a period of time and under circumstances that a reasonable person would determine is for the primary purpose of observing or contacting minors." MCL 28.733(b). But, considering this is such a subjective definition you could be putting yourself at risk. No, you do not have the right to be around other kids when you are a convicted sex offender. You better double check with your parole / probation officer about attending school events. The school is not the one to tell you yes or no; the rules of your probation or parole is what guides you.
