Ex-husband refuses to pay his half of medical expenses.

My ex refuses to pay any portion of medical expenses for our two children. Our court-signed parenting plan orders that I carry the insurance, and that additional medical expenses be shared equally. Is there some means, other than retaining a lawyer that can impress upon him that it is in his best interest to pay?

Since there is already a court order and he is not caring enough to obey the court order, the next step may have to be the court giving him a choice of obeying the court order or jail. To get to this step, you likely will have to file a motion/petition with the appropriate court asking for the court to find the person in contempt. What you can do is review your court documents with an attorney to see what are the provisions of the court orders. Sometimes, the court orders do not have the provisions that a person thinks are there. If a person is not violating a court order, the court cannot find that person in contempt for a nonviolation. There is no requirement that a natural person hires an attorney. If you feel comfortable handling the matter yourself, you have that right.
