"Petitioner" is the one who starts the proceeding, "Respondent" is the other pary. "Pro per" is Latin for "for yourself," meaning representing yourself, without a lawyer, which is rarely the best way to go, especially when you don't even know the meaning of those words. There's a lot of legalese in a lawsuit, so you're best off hiring a lawyer. A petitioner in pro per is a person who presents a petition to the court, and who appears before a court without a legal representative or lawyer. "In propria persona" is a Latin Phrase which means "in the person of yourself.”. "In Pro Per" is a short form of the Latin phrase, "In Propria Persona”. The full term of "In Propria Persona" is hardly ever used in court. A person who is acting In Pro Per is called a Pro Per. In divorce cases, a petitioner can appear in the court without the assistance of a lawyer and present his or her case.
