My borther in law in is bergen county jail for the past few months and was placed in the gang unit WHEN HE IS NOT A GANG MEMEBER. they arrested him a sting with other people who are gang members, so they labeled him one... he is constantly getting into fights and getting hurt because of this. He is a very sick person he has chrones disease very bad. We do not know what to do. he has a public defender as there are no funds to hire a attorney... my sister in law has tried to call the public defender but she is not getting back to us. were afraid that my brother in law could possilby be killed in there. we need help.

Your best option is to get in touch with your brother in law's lawyer. If you cannot get through on the phone, maybe you can make an appointment to go in person. You can try to advocate on his behalf to the jail warden or the classification unit by phone calls and letters.

if you cannot connect with his attorney you might contact the warden and ask that he be placed in protective custody-not the best solution but at least he will be safe. public defenders do not generally speak with family/friends because of attorney-client privilege and time issues. you might also call the office, ask for a supervisor and tell him/her that he has been attacked and his life is at risk.
