Pulled over for DUI. Guaranteed no drugs/ETOH. I consented to a blood draw. What exactly are they looking for?

Depending on who you ask, BAC stands for "Blood Alcohol Concentration." Some people think it stands for "breath alcohol concentration", but what we're really interested in is the alcohol in your blood. The alcohol in your blood is what goes to your brain and effects you. The standard for intoxication is .08 GRAMS of alcohol per 100ml of blood, a standard vial of blood. However, blood is constantly being defused to the lungs like all other organs. Some scientist basically estimated approximately 100ml of blood is defused to the lungs over the course of 210 Liters of respiration. Hence, if you took a breath test, you'll note that it is delineated as ".08g/210L". Of course the big issue is you didn't breath 210 Liters of air. You breathed at best between 1.5 and 3 Liters. The machine looks at the molecule flashes of ethyl alcohol, calculates the grams in that sample, and mathematically extrapolates the sample upward to the 210 Liter denominator. You can appreciate what a small amount of alcohol that is supposedly being detected in a rather large, entirely hypothetical volume of air. Put it into perspective. A teaspoon has about five grams. So divide that by five, that's one gram, now take les than 10 percent of that... that's how much alcohol the machine is supposedly describing in 210 Liters of air, a volume about the size of a small closet. And that's assuming, of course, that the machine is even reading it correctly and not misinterpreting certain interferents, even in microscopic amounts, as ethyl alcohol. I have heard some describe it as "body alcohol concentration". That's not accurate. That would include metabolites of controlled substances as well. More 0 found this answer helpful found this helpful | 1 lawyer agrees Undo Vote Helpful Undo Unhelpful Undo 0 comments
