How does a differed felony work once I’ve completed the terms of my sentence?

Business Questions 3 views 1 answers
I took a plea deal in regards to a felony menacing charge I received and I will be completing the terms of my probation next month. The felony will be dropped and a misdemeanor menacing will stay on my record. I turned in my weapons according to the deal and will be able to get them back once my probation is complete. How does this work with future background checks for employment but also background checks for purchasing firearms in the future? Do I have to wait a certain period before I’m able to? And do I need to get them legally sealed for all this to occur?

Your lawyer should have informed you that you agreed to a "split plea" under Colorado Law. DAs use split please to make sure that you cannot seal your record in this case. None of the dismissed charges can be sealed unfortunately. As for your right to bear arms, once the felony is dismissed unless the misdemeanor was a crime of domestic violence - you should be eligible to possess and to purchase firearms. Check with the Colorado Bureau of Investigations to be absolutely certain.
