Legal fees are subject to a defense of the statute of limitations as is any other type of debt. Each state has different laws stating how much time must pass before a claim can be rejected as barred by time, so I would suggest that you look on the state's web site to read what the laws are in your state on this topic. However, remember that the statute of limitations is only a defense to a lawsuit. It doesn't stop a lawsuit from being filed or a valid judgment from being entered. It is up to you to actively claim this defense, or it means nothing whatsoever! Hope this perspective helps!

The other attorney is a debt collector subject to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You can dispute the debt based on the age and make the attorney provide proof that the debt is still collectible. You may also want to consult with a local consumer law attorney and bring the documentation that you have. [I am a Virginia-licensed attorney. This communication is intended as general information and not specific legal advice, and this communication does not create an attorney-client relationship.] I hope this helps.
