Is there a way to get custody of my niece if I dont have the money to afford all legal fees?

My brother past away a year ago just a week before his daughter was born. I do not feel like my nieces mother is fit to take care of her. My niece was born with methamphetamine in her system and her mother has a history of drug use which im certain she is using again. She cant hold a steady job, she has an unstable home and my niece is always with a sitter while her mother goes out of town for days when she is not working. She also has three other children that are not in her care. I have little access to my niece and I am constantly worried about her. I would love to have legal custody of her and give her a stable happy home but I am worried I cannot afford the legal money that comes with trying to get custody.

Attorney Answer

You can try to find an attorney willing to work with you on payments over time, or provide services at a reduced rate (or even for free). Like most legal processes outside of small claims, there are lots of rules to follow at various stages (procedural, evidentiary) that would be difficult for you to try to handle on your own, so having an attorney is definitely the best way to go.
