I got caught driving with suspended license. What should I do?

Criminal Defense 1 views 3 answers
Cop stopped me because I have long-standing warrants (all traffic-registration,etc).He told me I have $2,500 warrant due to failure to appear. At that time, paying rent was the most important thing to me.I have very little money to and will lose my job if I go to jail.I have no idea how to handle this. Should I go to the court and take care of the warrant first?(Could be 3 different courts-do I have to go each of them?) Will the judge allow me to pay $2,500 several payments? Will that help me with driving with suspended license case? If I go to jail,I'll probably lose my job.And if I lucky to be avoid jail time, what are the chances my license get reinstated after I complete judge's order? Will I be able to hire an attorney?(I make about $1,500 a month) Please help.

You need to get the hold lifted for each violation and get the matter put on calendar in each court. With the hold lifted you might be able to get your license reinstated so you can legally drive while you deal with this. If registration is one of the issues- you need to get your vehicle registered. Having a license when you go to court will help avoid jail time. You dd not state why your license was suspended in the first place. Some suspensions do carry some jail time; ie if you were driving while your license was suspended for a DUI.

In your case I would strongly advise you to get an attorney to help you deal with the warrant and then turn to the outstanding traffic matters. Clearing the warrant will not help you with the suspended license case although it may keep you out of jail for the time being. As for that charge I cannot give you an estimate of the amount of time that will be required without knowing all your facts and circumstances as well as the Vehicle Code section under which you were cited. There are about 5 that could apply and each has a different outcome. You'll definitely need the attorney who cleared the warrant to deal with the rest of this mess.

You should seek the advice of counsel who can determine your outstanding cases and represent you on the current 14601 charge. If your license was suspended because of a DUI, this will enhance the penalties, so if you have the means, I highly suggest you retaiin an attorney.
