Can I claim my son's half sister as my dependent, if she lived with me and I paid for her?

I have a son and he has a half sister that lives with me. She isn't blood related to me or legally related but I've raised her for the past 3 years. I am her only source of income and she is 4 years old. Can I claim her in my taxes since she lived with me all year long and I paid 100% of her expenses? I can get a letter from mom who has sole custody of her that she gives me permission to claim her because she is a full time student and doesn't work.

Yes, you may be able to claim her if you meet all the tests as a qualifying relative under IRS rules. For a summary of these rules, please see my legal guide here at entitled Qualifying Relative As a Dependent at the following link: http://www.attorneyqna.com/legal-guides/ugc/qualifying... The way I read your explanation is the half-sister is a half-sibling and a sibling qualifies as a qualifying child. So get the letter form her mom and claim her as a sibling. You probably are close enough to take her as a dependent but I have not researched the matter so there could be a contrary opinion.
