Can costs of living in a rehab half-way house be deducted?

My son went through drug rehab last year and has been living in a half-way house since Feb. of last year. He has a job but doesn't make very much money. Can he deduct the cost of living in the half-way house (rent, utilites, etc.) on his income tax return? He has no other significant deductions, so does not file long form. Thank you.

No, personal, family, and living expenses are not deductible expenses. If there is legitimate medical care and treatment for drug addiction given at the half-way house, then that could be deducted to the extent it exceeds the 7.5% cap. But if it is more a place to live than a treatment facility, it probably doesn't qualify for the income tax deduction.
