What happens when you get reported to immigration authority by an individual?

I am currently undocumented after overstaying my visa. I am trying to get married soon to a US citizen. Long story short, my ex-boyfriend who has had a long time grudge on me recently went to ICE/immigration authority and reported my name. Will this automatically put me under removal proceedings? Will this prevent me from adjusting status through marriage to US citizen?

There is really nothing much that you can do, except for wait for immigration to act on the tip. They may not act on it. They may act on it. Sometimes they are so overwhelmed with complaints that they do not know where to start. But, the not stays on their database, so, it is best to call a lawyer-- www.nationalimmigrationlawyer.com-- and see what your options are in case you do get picked up. DHS receives hundreds of complaints a day. They act on some. They don't act on some, but they put you in their radar.

Good day. ICE does not always listen to individuals who try to report people. As long as you do marry your US citizen, and if it is a valid marriage according to the immigration rules, you should be OK to get green card. What does matter, though, is how soon you do marry. If you do so before you are put in proceedings, both the forms i-130 and I-485 can be filed at same time. If you marry after being put in proceedings then USC spouse can only file I-130 to start. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) must decide whether they will exercise their prosecutorial discretion to place you in removal (deportation) proceedings. It is not automatic that just because someone reports you to ICE you will be placed in removal proceedings. If they decide to, they will serve you, either personally or by mail, with a Notice to Appear (NTA), which is the charging document to start removal proceedings. And if they do, they can't just deport you as you have the right to appear before an immigration judge to fight your case. Be careful with marriage to a US citizen, because you must marry for love, and not just for immigration issues, because to do that is illegal.
