Double parking citation in Los Angeles.

1 views 2 answers
I was dropping my boyfriend off in front of his apartment at 2 AM in a quiet street in Los Angeles after he walked me to my car. I did not have my car unattended, did not have my engines off, and was not in standstill for more than a minute (we were stopped literally as we were saying goodbye.) The cop jotted down something from my license, and said he was giving me a citation, and left without giving me a ticket. What is the difference between a citation and a ticket? What are the defenses against double parking violations in Los Angeles? I have never received a verbal citation before, what should I expect to happen? Thank you for your help.

"Citation" is just the formal name for a ticket. In most states, the officer is required to cite you on scene for a traffic violation. If you were not cited on scene and did not receive anything in the mail shortly thereafter, then it is unlikely that you have been properly cited for a traffic offense. An officer cannot cite you verbally; most likely he decided at the last minute not to give you a ticket. If you do receive notice of a citation or a hearing, you should contact a local traffic or defense attorney, because you may have a strong defense against the alleged violation.

This is certainly not typical in Los Angeles. It is doubtful whether you will receive anything in the mail if he did not cite you at the time.
