Do I still file for bankruptcy? Are there lawyers who will do this for a reduced rate, since I don't have much of an income? Never had to do this before, and not sure of how to proceed.

There are Legal Aid clinics that may be able to help you on the fee, or even do the bankruptcy for free. Normal fees for a lawyer would be about $1000 plus the filing fee, but the fees vary. Contact attorneys who will do the first appointment for free and get a quote. There are a number of attorneys who do pro bono petitions and who will allow you to pay them over time.

The term impoverished has many meanings, and it may not do anything for you legally. Although you may be entitled to free legal services in your community as a result of your income level, there may be no need for you to file bankruptcy. Frankly, if you are unable to pay your basic living expenses, filing bankruptcy may not be the right thing for you to do at this time. After all, if you need to run up debts after your bankruptcy is filed, what will you do in the future.
