How should I handle this?

I was unable to make it to court date due to being out of the country. I received a letter in the mail saying my license will be suspended as of August 1st for failure to appear/pay but there is no amount due and for suspended period it says the time is indefinitely. This is my first time dealing with the court system here in the state of Rhode Island, my ticket was for no seatbelt. It says I can request a hearing up to 10 days after order date but I didn't received the letter till after the 10th date. I am still sending a letter out Monday morning. I am willing to do what ever I can to avoid my license being suspended. Should I hire an attorney?

Usually, if you go to the courthouse you will simply have to pay the fine for the ticket before the suspension date and the suspension will be removed before it ever goes into effect. The other option is to file a motion to vacate at the court and request a hearing where you can attempt to explain what happened to the judge.

Generally, you are always better off hiring an attorney. But if cost is an issue, consider going to the DMV or traffic court office - the employees are often very helpful.
