Is it against the law to delete email messages from your work email account when you leave the company?

The president of the company is trying to say that I broke the law because I cleared out my email account when I left the company. The account was my email account for the company. I rarely saved any information there to begin with, but what I did save was my only for my reference.

What you deleted was company property like it or not. The consequences shouldn't be that great as e-mail is never truly deleted. It's just stored in a part of your computer you can't see. Their IT person should be able to retrieve the data.
