I assume for my comments that your daughter is 18 years old or older. If she is under 18, the process would be different as should would be in the juvenlie court. Theft is a first degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to 6 months in jail. Although it is not reasonable to expect the maximum penality, she is at risk for some jail time, fines and probation. A theft conviction can also make it very difficult to find employment. The best approach is to obtain an attorney. She can ask the court to appoint one if she cannot afford one. It is most often best to plead not guilty at the first court date. This will give an attorney the opportunity to challenge the charge and maybe negotiate a reduction or a diversion program - which would keep it from going on her record at the end.
