Ticket for Expired Tabs

I got a ticket on my car today for expired tabs. I purchased the tabs and received them before they were expired, but simply forgot to put them on. What are the chances that I can fight the ticket and win?

If the ticket was for expired registration then and you did have valid registration then you would likely win. If the ticket was for failure to display the tabs and your tabs weren't displayed then it is a long shot. I would go and talk to the prosecutor and see if you can work out a deal. If you can show him proof that your car was registered but you just forgot to put on the tabs he might cut you a break.

The best thing for you to do is schedule a time to meet with a hearing officer. If this ticket was in St. Paul, or the surrounding area, most of the hearing officers are fairly reasonable. Make sure you bring in proof that you had purchased your tabs before they expired (or at the very least, before you received the ticket. It wouldn't hurt to have a picture of your current license plate showing that the tabs are now on the license plate. Many times, if you are reasonable with the hearing officers, they will be reasonable with you. If you are still having difficulty with this ticket, you may want to talk to a criminal defense attorney. Please feel free to contact our office for an initial consultation at no cost: 612-217-0077

In Minnesota, you have 10 days from the end of the month to put the tabs on the car. If the ticket was within those 10 days, then you would have a good defense, if not, then you are going to have a problem for failure to display the tabs. As a previous poster said, you should take it to the referee or hearing officer.
