Am I responsible for cashing a check i received in the mail that was counterfeit?

I was arrested today in shelby county. I am charged with possession of a forged instrument in the 2nd; what happened was I received some checks from Blue Cross Clue Shield of North Carolina; they said the were repayment for over payment of deductible and I cashed them. Well they came back and said the bank said they were counterfeit. I don't understand how I can be responsible for this. And I am supposed to be started college in August for nursing, I currently am Certified Nursing Assistant and am certified through the state of Alabama; so if this sticks as a felony I will lose my job, and will not be able to have the career that I have worked so hard to get to. I'm very confused and not sure what I need to do please help me and give me some advise on what to do.

Who else's responsibility would it be? You got some money from your bank, you gave them bad checks that aren't worth anything that they can't paid on. There are plenty of forged check scams where companies, usually foreign ones whose checks take a couple weeks to not clear, send checks and ask the target to wire their own cash quickly to a U.S. accomplice. If you did that, you were an accomplice to check fraud, maybe unknowingly, but your bank would still consider your forged checks NSF and not honor them them and you'd still be responsible. Here you state you got checks, plural. That makes the story less believable. If you do have coverage with Blue Cross of NC, why woud they send you more than 1 check if they were just reimbursing you for some overpayments? If you don't have coverage with Blue Cross of NC and there were no deductibles to overpay, your cashing the checks has no justification. If you did have coverage with Blue Cross, I'd contact them and see what they say. If you don't have Blue Cross coverage or you do but you don't get anywhere with them, I'd hire a criminal defense lawyer to negotiate a settlement so that you can pay back the money and get the charge dismissed.
