Do car dealers have to accept power of attorney when a service member is overseas?

A friend and her husband bought a car a week before he deployed overseas. They set up power of attorney before he left so that she could take care of any issues that may arise. Now the car dealership is giving her a difficult time about finishing the loan papers and making and adjustment to the contract to include gap insurance. They say their loan department won't accept the power of attorney.

Generally, and unless your state law says otherwise, there is no penalty for failing to accept a POA. It is not uncommon for businesses (banks in particular) to require a specific POA either on their forms or to specifically address the intended action. You should see if the lender has a form or if a more specific POA will work. You probably have the typical military general POA.
