How can I get my license back? Will I see jail time for driving on a suspended license?

I have a suspended license for 8 failures to appear (speeding, running red lights, things like that when I was a silly 16-year-old..) All of the FTAs happened over five years ago. On top of that, I've had my car impounded twice and two tickets for driving on a suspended license. The most recent ticket for driving on a suspended license was over two years ago. Suddenly I have a bench warrant for driving on a suspended license and it says "no cite and release." What can I do about all of this? I've tried to set court dates for these old tickets before, but they're in collections and it gives me no other option but to pay in full. I'm a struggling college student. I can't afford full payments. I'm even on food stamps. Any advice?

Whether it is fair or not, your record is going to weigh heavily against you. If the traffic tickets have gone to collections you have to make arrangements with the collection agency to pay them. Driving on a suspended license is treated much more seriously than driving without a license. You've done it twice according to your question. I would guess that jail time is virtually certain although maybe a lawyer can help you out here. Don't tell me you can't pay. You are paying for college so it's a matter of priorities. If you truly can't pay ask for the PD when you are eventually picked up and arrested for this. It would be better to approach the court before that happens and possibly avoid being taken into custody.

I agree with my colleague. You may want to call the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office to see if they can help. Some PD offices help in these situations, while some don't. www.JoeTorriLaw.com

My colleagues are correct. You need an attorney and must take proactive steps if you want to clear all of your matters. Your open cases are going to cause you more problems if you do not take care of them. Andrew Roberts
