Many questions, few that I could answer here based on the 3 sentences provided. 1) First, there's no such thing as a simple divorce if your ex isn't in agreement on EVERYTHING. This goes for grounds, assets, debts, support, retirement accounts and maintenance (alimony). 2) The filing fee varies by county, in Cook it's $337 plus $60 to have the sheriff serve your ex. 3) Yes, except in unique circumstances, only the sheriff or special process server can give your ex the papers. Other methods, such as certified mail, do not count and will delay your case months or years. 4) You will need a summons, a complaint for dissolution, an affidavit of military service, and a certificate of dissolution (You can get this from the clerk's office). The local rules of your county may require other items, for example, in Cook County you need a Domestic Relations Cover Sheet. 5) Child support is set by statute, 750 ILCS 5/505. Maintenance (What we call Alimony) must be petitioned for. Talk to an attorney for specific guidance in your case. Best of luck!
