What are my Wisconsin tenant rights in regards to mice living within the walls of my rental unit?

I live in a "fairly new" (approx 15 years old) 12 unit apartment complex. I have lived here for 22 months and have had no problems or complaints until now. About 4 weeks ago I noticed signs of mice in my garage. I should mention that I live on the 2nd floor and my attached garage is located on the lower level. I immediately set out mouse traps and have at least 5 trapped mice per day. Then... about 3 weeks ago I began hearing squeaking, scratching and running WITHIN my walls. To make matters worse, last night I heard sounds coming from the other side of my patio door screen... when I got up to look I saw a mouse trying to chew his way through my screen. My neighbor shares my concern and informed the landlord. His reply "I know, I should start charging them rent" Infuriating!

You have a right to a decent, safe, sanitary rental property and your landlord has the duty to keep the rental property safe, sanitary and up to code. Mice in your house is not sanitary nor safe, you need to inform the landlord yourself! Tell him what is going on, also put it in writing. Keep receipts of all the things you purchase in regards to the mice. You need to tell him immediately.
