I got a DUI in CA and am moving to IL.

I have already received my sentencing in May, and have completed all but the drinking driving class. I am on summary probation for 5 years.
Is it legal to move and if so, is Illinois' DMV linked to California's DMV?
Thank you.
It is not illegal to move, but you must finish the drinking driving class. This may sometimes be completed in another State that meets the requirements of California, if the California judge allows it. You need to find a similar program in Illinois, then request permission of the Court in California to complete your drinking driving program in under the out of state program. You must report your completion to the California court. On the other hand, there is a procedure that allows you to delete the drinking driving class and license restriction if you were a resident of another state at the time of your arrest and conviction (See California Vehicle Code §13353). You will need an attorney to handle this procedure.
Assuming this is a first conviction, the First Conviction Program is a three (3) month program. Following an initial enrollment interview, all participants complete a total of: 12 hours of education sessions; 18 hours of group counseling sessions; and 3 individual counseling sessions. This should not be too hard to complete.
The California/Illlinois Link. The problem is the Interstate Driver’s License Compact. This is a pact among 45 participating states to share information regarding certain types of convictions, including drunk driving offenses, such as DUI or DWI. Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee, and Georgia are the only states not participating in the pact. Thus, if a person gets convicted of a drunk driving offense in one state, the other participating states will be advised. The agreement essentially means that, in the 45 member states, there is one driving record for an individual person. If your driving privilege is revoked or suspended in one state, you cannot run to another participating state and get a license (your license is suspended in the other member states). The days of running for the state line ala Bonnie and Clyde are over. In order to get a driver’s license in Idaho, you must first get your license reinstated in the convicting state. If you fail to complete the Drinking Driving Class, a warrant will issue for your arrest. This information will be transmitted to the State of Illinois.
I hope this answers your questions.

You can move without an issue. The problem will be the DUI course. You will have to either complete the program prior to moving or request an approved out of state program for both the court and the DMV purposes. As long as you do not complete the CA requirements to get a valid license you will be unable to get a valid license in IL.
