I want to find out if my wife owns a house that is fully paid for and I am not on the deed can I file for chapter 7 in state of CT without losing a house? I have medical bills and credit card debt that is over $70,000 dollars on my name only. Also what is the income guideline for family of 4. Thank you
Your description of your situation doesn't provide enough facts. If you assisted your wife in purchasing the home, and/or paid most of the mortgage and/or transferred your interest in the home to your wife, the trustee could claim a fraudulent transfer or an "equitable" interest in the house.
The median household income for a family of four in Connecticut is currently $130,975 per year, not including Social Security benefits. If It sounds like you're trying to file a bankruptcy without jointly filing with your wife. That often is not the best solution, say if your wife also has debts, or could be responsible for your debts (such as medical bills), a solo bankruptcy by you would leave her stuck with those debts. If you have a fully-paid-off house at risk, it's really smart to hire a bankruptcy attorney to represent and assist you in planning and filing for bankruptcy. There are many competent attorneys on this website, many of whom offer free or low-cost initial interviews.
