Can I be forced to stop receiving SSI and be switched to (lower) Social Security Retirement payments, at age 62?

I am 62, and will be 63 in May. I just received letters from the SSA, "suggesting" that I apply for Social Security Retirement benefits, and actually stating that I cannot draw SSI after May, and that I will have to return any SSI payments which I may receive, after that date. Can they stop my SSI payments, and require that I instead receive SSA payments?

The very short answer is yes. Because SSI is a needs based program, there is a requirement that you file for any other possible benefits you may be entitled to, since that reduces the costs of SSI to the Federal/State government. However, if the Social Security is less than you currently get on SSI, you should be able to continue to get some SSI. If you have no other income, you will not end up with less money but rather $20 more total between the two benefits per month. But if you don't apply, you are not cooperating, and they can cut off your SSI entirely.
