What if your lawyer never showed up for the court date, and I received a warrant in the mail because of this action?

I paid a lawyer to represent me in a traffic court matter, he never did, the only reason i know this is because I received a warrant of arrest for this. I paid him for his service, but he never showed, is there anything legally I can do? How do I resolve this with the court?

Your first step is to contact the lawyer you paid to determine what happened. There is a chance that a mistake has been made. Moreover, if he did not show up or otherwise contact the court, he may be able to resolve the matter with the court. If you do not get satisfaction from the lawyer, then you can always file a grievance after the matter is completed. You will have to post a non-appearance bond and appear in court to answer both the ticket and the failure to appear. Since you are not against hiring a lawyer, you should hire another lawyer (if the first one does not fix the error, and demand your money be returned by the first lawyer. Start with a phone call to the original lawyer. If you do not receive a return call within an hour, I would fax him a letter asking for a response within the hour out of concern of being arrested. If you do not receive a response to either of those efforts, hire a second lawyer, post a bond, deal with the matter, and file a grievance on the first lawyer. Cynthia

I agree with Ms. Henley. Either your lawyer or the court erred. In either case, your current lawyer should be able to easily fix this without it costing you any more money.
