Why is it taking so long to get an interview scheduled?

I'm American, my wife is Iranian and we have been "documentarily qualified" and a "priority case" since April of 2019, we're IR-1 visa class. And ever since the last year, she hears about others in her country managing to leave to conduct their interviews at US embassies elsewhere and more recently even a college fellow of hers leaving on a study visa to California, having started his process just a little later than we had! We have been waiting and waiting with nothing more to hear from the NVC to our question than that we're just having to wait. Is something wrong here? Is it because she's in Iran and not the country where her interview is supposed to be scheduled (Turkey)? Have we done something wrong? I feel like we've been forgotten.

Generally, travel bans and covid delays put your filing at the bottom of a list. FYI, F-1 visas are a current priority for school attendance. My sympathies.

Without actually reviewing the case related documents, it is difficult to assess what may be the issue. Travel bans and COVID-19 have caused a lot of backlogs.

The U.S. State Department includes immigrant visas in a priority category for processing. However, the pandemic delayed processing for over a year. Your wife's visa application is in competition with many other family-based immigrant visa applications. Hang in there. Here is an article for review: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/News/visas-news/immigrant-visa-prioritization.html
