What legal arguments will you present in support of your position? In what format? When and where? What response will you have when the state says, the legal limit is .08. He blew .09? If you had appendicitis, would you perform your own surgery?

It comes down to how comfortable you are in presenting your own arguments. If you are familiar with the law and legal theories that will be beneficial for you, you could potentially save yourself money representing yourself. However, most people are very unfamiliar with the legal process, making pro se representation typically a bad idea. A DUI attorney will know far more about how to limit the impact of this alleged offense than a non-attorney, so it could very well be worth the investment.

I am not a MN attorney but you need to figure out what that DUI will really cost you if convicted. Include the costs of figuring out what to file and when (that is the procedural knowledge that we have as attorneys), what your real defense is and how you will prove it (that is the knowledge of the law that we have), and then how you will deal with the prosecutors. In truth - if you want to go in and plead guilty, you might be able to do that without counsel, but if you are going to contest guilt, you'd be a fool to go it alone. Best of luck - get a good lawyer and take it to court.

If you want any chance of beating your DWI to keep it off your driving record and your criminal record, you will absolutely need an experienced DWI attorney to represent you. While fees can be hefty, it will be worth it if your attorney can find a way to keep it off your record. Of course, it is not easy to beat a DWI, and no attorney can guarantee a winning result. However, once the DWI goes on your record, it stays there for the rest of your life. You cannot get a DWI expunged in Minnesota. When you hire a lawyer to represent you for a DWI, think of it as providing yourself the opportunity to get your charges dismissed or reduced. Without an attorney, you have no opportunity for those outcomes. Also, a good attorney will explain the entire process to you every step of the way and help you navigate through the procedures you need to follow regarding your license revocation, the criminal charges, probation, and everything else that comes along with it. If you can afford it, hiring a good DWI defense attorney is always worth it, even if the attorney isn't able to beat your case. It sounds like you have already consulted with a number of attorneys, and the bottom line is that you're looking for the best "deal" on legal fees. Hiring an attorney for this matter is an investment in the rest of your life. Do not let price be the primary factor when making this decision. Hire someone who is knowledgeable, experienced, patient, and within your budget. Otherwise, plan on just having the DWI on your record for the rest of your life. It may sound harsh, but that's the reality.
