How does my ex-husband get his license back after 3 DUIs in multiple states?
Anonymous3 views3 answers
He got one in WI more than 10 years ago. In August 2008 he got one in MN, then another in WI in December 2008. What does he need to do to get his license back? He has served 60 days in jail in 2009. Does he need to pay all other fines and penalties in order to have his license restored?

The short answer is that he needs to get a lawyer to help him sort this all out. Because your question does not give enough information, the answer to your question may be complicated. However, as one step in the process, yes all fines, etc. must be paid and all other obligations of the sentences must be fulfilled before he can get a license back.
The answer to this is relatively simple; but the process may be difficult.
He needs to comply with all of the requirements for license reinstatement in both states. That is, the full revocation periods must be served, all fines paid (including fines for any other tickets), insurance procured, assessments completed or repeated, treatment programs finished, reinstatements fees paid, etc. In Wisconsin, the DMV will tell him exactly what he needs to do. I expect that something similar exists in Minnesota. Unfortunately, I doubt that there will be any shortcuts. Best of luck. Andrew Mishlove

Your ex needs to contact the agencies in charge of driver licenses in all the states he received a DUI and ask those agencies what he needs to do to get his driver license back.
Yes, generally, he must pay all fines and penalties for his license to be restored.
Further, he must not be suspended or revoked in any other state to have his license restored.
He should check on whether he has paid all penalties for the out of state DUIs first. Once those DUIs are handled, he should deal with WI. In WI, he should call the DOT to determine how to get his license back.
He may be able to receive some guidance by checking his WI driving status on line:
Regular driving privileges: https://trust.dot.state.wi.us/occsin/occsinservlet?whoami=statusp1
Occupational license privileges: https://trust.dot.state.wi.us/occsin/occsinservlet?whoami=occsp1
He may need to hire an attorney, but he may be able to handle the steps on his own depending on what they are. He needs to do the investigation before he can decide if he wants/needs an attorney.
Good luck to the both of you.
