Can my landlord make me re-key the mailbox when moving into a new apt?

My landlord (a property management) is wanting me to re-key my mailbox to the apt and I just moved in 2 days ago. I have given them every last dollar of mine and cannot afford to re-key until next paycheck which will still be another week. I'm wondering where the key from the current mailbox went.. And if I do re-key, do I need to give them the key when I move out? Thank you.

Check your lease. If the landlord is required by the lease to provide mail service, then the landlord must provide the key. If the terms are not mentioned in the lease, then that is a matter left for your negotiation skills.

It;s reasonable to expect that an apartment complex will provide you with a working key for the mailbox assigned to your unit as part of the lease agreement. Your rental agreement might address the issue, but I'm guessing it doesn't. I would be curious as to whether your neighbors had to re-key their mailboxes upon moving in, and as to whether the prior tenant in your unit was charged a fee for failing to return mailbox keys. It does not seem like an issue you would be wise to fight about, but let management know your feelings in a polite way, and ask whether you can split the cost or have it spread out over time.
