A month ago i recieved an email saying that my girlfriend had been cheating on me and it has turned out to be false. This person continues to email me repeating her same story and also has posted a blog on cheaterville.com.
You have not shown any false information being posted about you. If there has been false information posted, you can certainly look into a lawsuit for defamation.
The email you received does not defame you; it defames your girlfriend. You don't have a right to sue on behalf of your girlfriend.
The email and blog is relating to your girlfriend and not you. If you were named in the blog (not the email) then you may have a case but that only depends. The defamation must be false and it must lower you steam in the community in which you live in, after the blog is read by a 3rd person (by someone other than you and the person who posted the blog). The email will not count because it may have been read only by you and him. Defamation requires that a 3rd person lower his/her view point of you after becoming made aware of the false and defamatory statements. Also, the most important point here that the defamatory statement must have caused you damages. In other words, if because of the defamation you lost your job or some damage occurred, which would not have occurred absent those statements, then, and only then you MAY have a claim. Also remember that you have to prove your allegations otherwise you could get sued for malicious prosecution. If you feel strongly about your reputation being tarred, then you need to speak to a lawyer.

Other attorneys have addressed several of the important issues that pertain to defamation cases. Let me offer a practical perspective: you will need to come up with several thousand dollars to finance the case, payable at the time that you initiate the action. If it is vigorously defended, your personal life -- specifically all of your sex life and your relationship with your girlfriend -- will be delved into unsparingly. It may take a few years for the case to conclude. The outcome is uncertain. If you win, you get a judgment -- a legally enforceable right to collect your winnings by attaching any assets of the defendant. If the defendant has no significant assets, then it has all been for nothing because you can't get blood from a stone. A defamation case is very rarely a practical and feasible effort to redress the kinds of facts that you have complained of.
