Can you work freelance or be self-employed on OPT?

I am a geology student finishing up my PhD. My F1 visa expires soon. I am interested in applying for OPT. I would like to register as a state geologist and do free-lance consulting work. Is this possible on OPT? i.e., I would NOT have a job with a company, but rather be working for myself. Is this possible?

Yes, you can do this provided that the work conforms to any OPT restrictions that are listed on your I-20 by your school official.
