Since you are a first time offender you should be eligible for pretrial intervention. You will pay a fine and have to do community service but the charges will be dropped upon successful completion of the community service. You should not need an attorney and you can ask the prosecutor when you go to court. If they do not offer PTI, you may want to plead not guilty and ask for a jury trial and then retain a South Carolina criminal defense attorney

Based on your story, I cannot tell if only your friend was charged, or if you were charged also. Shoplifting 1st offese carries 30 days or a fine 9I'm not sure how much). She should ask for pre trial intervention. If she is allowed into ther program, she will do community service, and perhaps counseling, and the charges are dropped. no criminal record. If you were charged, and you did not know your friend was going to shoplift, you ared not guilty and should ask for a public defender, or look into hiring an attorney to go tp trial.
