Is there a way to get a copy of I9 form that I submitted to my former employer about almost 6 years back

I came to US in Mar 2006 on an L1B visa for a company with whom I was working in India. Soon after coming here I had submitted the I9 form. Then I did not know much about the form and did not keep a copy of it for my records. In Feb 2008, I moved to a different company with a change of status to H1B and later in 2010 got a conditional green card based on marriage to a US citizen. Now I would like to get a copy of the I9 that I gave to my former employer in Mar 2006 just to keep it for my records. Is there a way I can get this and if yes, from where? Does USCIS keep the I9 records? Or should I check with my former employer? Do I have the rights to claim a copy of it ? I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

The best option is requesting a FIOA from the agency that the I-9 was submitted. The agency should have a record of all interaction you had with them and be able to provide the complete file (minus any security protected information) on a CD for your use.

i agree with C.C. Abbott. Make a FOIA application. The form is found at www.uscis.gov/forms. The employer may also have kept a copy.

You can just try calling your former employer's HR office, too. Some employers are more responsive that others. If your record is easily accessible and all of your documents were maintained, then they might be able to send you a copy a lot sooner than the government.
