Name change during naturalization in Newark NJ USCIS office

2 views 3 answers
I am going for my naturalization interview next week and want to do a name change. Does anyone know if the name change will result in a delay in my oath ceremony or will I be able to take the oath the same day like most people? Can someone from Jersey answer this question please

You can ask for name change during your interview as well as for the letter to the oath ceremony. If officer can issue the letter then you will get one on the spot. Otherwise you will get by mail

NJ is one of two offices in the US that has the oath ceremony on the same day as the interview. However, this is not guaranteed. When changing your name it could slow down the verification. You just swear you are doing so for lawful reasons. It is possible you will have to return another day to take the oath. However, if you want to change your name, this will be the easiest way. Doing so after you are a citizen involves court procedures that are a hassle and have costs.
