What rights would a 16 year old father have in Washington State?

I am 17 years old and currently 13 weeks pregnant. I am worried about the baby's health due to the stress of not having the father around to support me or the baby. This is all due to his parents. We are only allowed limited time with each other. He is in school and trying his best to stay positive but it is hard and we are both under a great amount of stress. Is there anything we can do to be together without having to answer to his father? We only see each other 2 hours on Saturday and Sunday. I was wondering his rights as a teenage father. Shouldn't he still have the right to help support his pregnant girlfriend without fighting his father and causing grief?

The law has a tough time wrapping its collective brain around the idea that an infant can be a parent. Yes, the technical term for you and your partner is "infant" because neither of you has attained the age of 18. I don't mean it as a perjorative term. Having a baby *can* be a basis for emancipation. Doesn't have to be, but it can be. You can't control your partner's conduct or his parent's conduct, and the law doesn't provide a mechanism whereby you can make them do or refrain from doing anything. In the first place, technically neither of you is a parent yet. You can't be until the baby is born. After that, you can set up a child support order and a parenting plan if the two of you cannot agree how you are going to parent this child. If you agree, that is great. If you don't agree, well that is what court is for. Your partner is going to have to recognize that his world has changed, and will change significantly when the baby's born. His relationship with his parents is changing as well. But that is an issue for him to deal with, not you. I hope this helps. I know it isn't what you wanted to hear. Elizabeth Powell
