I bought a car and in the same day i had mixed reservations about the purchase of the car due to the fact that it was spur of the moment and i noticed afterwards that the engine light was on and i want to return the car.I have had the car for only one day. The dealership has agreed to recheck and fix whatever is making the engine light come on but I do not want the car

Generally there is no right to cancel a car sale unless there is something in the paperwork that says so. Still there are lots of technical laws that a car dealer may violate and which may give you the right to cancel the sale for a "legal" reason. You need to talk to a local Consumer Law attorney who deals with this kind of case. Call your local attorney's Bar Association and ask for a referral to an attorney near you, or you can go to this web site page (http://ohiolemonlaw.com/locate-a-local-attorney.html) for a nation-wide listing of consumer lawyers and find one near you (lawyers don’t pay to get listed here and most of them are members of the only national association for Consumer Law lawyers, NACA.net). Also, for every legal right you have, you only have a limited amount of time to actually file a lawsuit in court or you automatically lose (it's called the statute of limitations), so don't waste your time getting to an attorney and finding out what your rights are.
