Can I report any principal losses on my REIT? The co. filed for BK in '08 (in the news) and we've lost our 6-figure investment.

We did not earn any interest in 2008 but the company reported 1099's to the IRS and we had to pay taxes on interest earned but not paid to us nor received. Subsequently the owners are now in jail and the company has been turned over to two Chapter 11 Trustees (in LA).

REITs are complex entities. You should contact a tax attorney in your area to discuss your specific facts. ******************************************************************* IRS CIRCULAR 230 DISCLOSURE: To ensure compliance with requirements imposed by the IRS, we inform you that any U.S. tax advice contained in this communication (including any attachments) is not intended or written to be used, and cannot be used, for the purpose of (i) avoiding penalties under the Internal Revenue Code or (ii) promoting, marketing or recommending to another party any transaction or matter addressed herein. *******************************************************************
