Is petty theft a felony or misdemeanor in California (Los Angeles)?

I'm a individual landlord that's reviewing an application for rent. On the rent application, the potential renter indicated that he was never convicted of a felony. After doing a background check, it appears he pleaded guilty to and was convicted of petty theft. Is petty theft in California is a felony or misdemeanor?

It is typically a misdemeanor. Most petty theft charges are for shoplifting, or for theft of an item less than $950 now (used to be $400 until amount was raised). A petty theft charge, with a prior conviction, can be charged as a felony. See California Penal Code section 484

Petty theft in California is a misdemeanor only. But, if the client has been convicted of 3 or more theft priors under PC 666 then on the fourth or subsequent theft matter, he or she can be charged with a petty theft felony under PC 666 known as "petty theft with a prior." Therefore, if you don't see PC 666 or any "prior" language, then it should be a mere vanilla misdemeanor petty theft. Your on your way.
