Query regarding exemptions/allowances on payslip.
Anonymous4 views3 answers
Hi,
My payslip shows 3 federal exemptions/allowances and the marital status as 'married'.
My spouse is not working.
Please let know whether this is correct?
Thanks in advance.
You are allowed to claim on IRS form W-4 as many exemption as you have credits, dependants or other allowances. You have not indicated if you have children which are also exemptions/allowances. This determination is best made by a tax preparer who can accurately determine based upon all facts and cirumstances of your tax return, how many exemptions/allowances you are entitled to.
Without knowing your overall tax situation it is impossible to tell if this is correct for your situation. The best thing to do is complete the worksheet that is included with your form W-4 to determine what is the correct amount of exemptions based on your income, deductions, and credits.
The only thing this has an effect on is your withholding. When you go to do your return, you will still claim the correct information. The problem that this can create is incorrect withholding that leaves you with a large bill on April 15th.
