My husband & I have been looking into having my son adopted by my husband who has raised him since he was 6 months old. My son is 7 now & we haven't seen the bio father in over 5 years, he has agreed to sign his parental rights over to my husband. We have 3 children total & I am a college student only working 3/4 time right now so we can't afford an attorney. We ran across a website that is supposed to help you through the entire process for a fee, much more affordable than an attorney here. I need to know if this is a legitimate source or if it will just leave us out the money we pay, still needing help with the adoption ???? Help please!!!

If you want to know if a business is legitimate, then contact the BBB or the State Department of Commerce. Adoption is a complicated process, I follow the rule that if the State doesn't provide pro se or legal aid resources, then you absolutely need an attorney to help you. I always refer my clients to free State resources and utilize reduced fee services. Standardized forms are an effort to reduce cost, not increase profit margins. If you buy forms, I advise you to still get a local attorney to review them before filing.

An adoption involves more than just a few forms, it involves terminated one parent's rights and allows the other step parent to adopt. One of the hardest things is often getting service on the parent who is going to have their rights terminated. There's a lot involved. I wouldn't recommend handling it without an attorney no more than I would recommend doing your own root canal.
